Kathleen L. Raines, MSN, RN, APN, CDE, Administrator of Patient Care, Donna A. Sanzari Women's Hospital OB/GYN, Inpatient and Outpatient Diabetes, Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) Technicians, Planetree Initiatives


Kathleen Lorenc Raines serves as the administrator for Diabetes at the Donna A. Sanzari Women's Hospital at HackensackUMC, Diabetes Education for adults and children at the Molly Diabetes Center as well as the Planetree Initiative, which integrates complementary services such as stress management, Pilates and chiropractic care with traditional medicine. She has taught college-level and preparation-review courses.
Ms. Raines received a dual master’s degree in nursing administration and medical/surgical, maternal/child nursing. Her practicum included Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, St. Vincent's Hospital and Staten Island University Hospital. She is certified as an advanced practice nurse and a diabetes educator, and she is seeking International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA) certification as a patient doula.
Active in many professional organizations, Ms. Raines is a member of the Northeastern American Diabetes Leadership Council, the American Diabetes Diversity Council, the Complementary Alternative Medicine Tri-State Organization, American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), the American Nurses Association (ANA), the Garden State Association of Diabetes Educators, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She holds leadership positions with the American Diabetes Association, Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) and International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA). Ms. Raines has been published in Diabetes Spectrum, she has edited several books on the subject of diabetes, and has edited and contributed to publications for major corporations. She has spoken at various hospital seminars and has served as a national representative for the Diabetes Association. Ms. Raines has presented in Europe and nationally regarding patient-centered care, stress reduction and self-care for staff. She is a member of the New Jersey ANA, AONE of New Jersey, AWHONN, and the International Woman’s Leadership Association. She is licensed in New Jersey and South Carolina.
Ms. Raines received the first National Planetree Spirit of Caring Award in Seattle, Washington. Under her direction, HackensackUMC received the 2007 Top Fifty Best Places to Work in New Jersey Award. Ms. Raines is the administrator for the Diabetes Team formed in 2009. She led the group in receiving Advanced Diabetes certification granted by the Joint Commission in April of 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2015.  HackensackUMC was the first hospital in New Jersey to receive this distinction. In addition, Ms. Raines was the recipient of the 2013 New Jersey Garden State Educator of the Year Award.
