Joan Colella, RN, DNP, ANP-BC, NP-C, Manager, Patient Care Department Value-based Projects, APN Administrative and Practice Liaison
Dr. Joan Colella joined HackensackUMC in 2001, serving in the John Theurer Cancer Center’s Radiation Oncology Department as the medical center’s first nurse practitioner in this specialty, and currently serves as Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), Value-based Projects Manager in the Department of Patient Care. Prior to joining HackensackUMC, Dr. Colella held administrative positions as the director of Surgical Services, the vice president of Nursing, and board-certified nurse practitioner with prescriptive privileges since 1998.
In her role as a value-based manager, and an actively practicing APN, Dr. Colella partners with physicians and other disciplines using evidence-based strategies in the development of numerous nurse-led protocols towards the achievement of value-based results. Dr. Colella’s notable nurse-led protocols developed and/or adopted include: mobility protocol, nurse-to-nurse inter-shift communication, APN collaborated one sitter to one patient (1:1 sitters) protocol, medically managed patient with diverticulitis diet plan, Safety Zone management, the Confusion Assessment Method and the mini-cog dementia assessment tool adaptation, multidisciplinary rounds standardization pilots, and electronic APN peer review process.
A nursing diploma graduate from St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, Dr. Colella earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Master of Public Administration Degree in Healthcare Administration, a Master of Science in Nursing Degree as an Adult Primary Care Advanced Practice Nurse with certification in Nursing Education, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree, as well as a Six Sigma Green Belt certificate. Dr. Colella has published in several peer-reviewed journals, developed clinical and professional recognition programs, received several awards, and established the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates Northern New Jersey HackensackUMC chapter. She has participated in research as a primary and co-investigator and in the development of clinical service programs.
Dr. Colella was awarded the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and New Jersey State Nurses Association Award for Excellence as a nurse practitioner and has received several Society of Urologic Nursing Outstanding Service awards. She is a member of several professional organizations, including: The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), New Jersey State Nurse Association and APN Forum, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center Alumnae, and Advanced Practice Provider Executives. As a community and professional service, Dr. Colella mentors all levels of nursing students.
