As administrator of nursing for Clinical Education and Nursing Practice and the Magnet program director, Denise Occhiuzzo plays an integral role in supporting HackensackUMC’s strategic initiatives by providing education and training for clinical personnel across the organization. She has held a variety of positions during her tenure at HackensackUMC, which began in 1975, including nursing assistant, staff nurse, nursing instructor, resource education coordinator, manager, and administrative director. In her position as Magnet program director, the medical center received its fifth consecutive designation in 2014—one of just two hospitals in the nation to do so.
Denise Occhiuzzo exemplifies a leader in healthcare with a background as a medical/surgical clinical nurse specialist, advanced practice nurse with specialties in wound, ostomy, continence certification. With primary focus on nursing professional development, Ms. Occhiuzzo has diverse experience in the field of advanced nursing and adult education. She has served as faculty in both academic and acute care settings, and has lectured at national conferences, including the National Magnet Conference and the American Organization of Nurse Executives. In addition, she has co-authored several articles.
Recognized as a leader in adult education, Ms. Occhiuzzo’s philosophy and career demonstrate her commitment to lifelong learning and development for all adults and healthcare providers across the organization. She believes that educational offerings and experiences must be consistently aligned with the vision, mission, and strategic directions of the medical center while meeting the needs of diverse learners.
Ms. Occhiuzzo is a graduate of Baptist Bible College and Seminary, Bergen Community College, William Paterson University, Pace University, and she is completing a Doctor of Education at Walden University. She was a recipient of the New Jersey State Nurses Association (NJSNA) Diva Award in 2007. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, NJSNA, the Association for Nursing Professional Development, and serves as a chairperson for Review Team I of the NJSNA.
