New Discharge Lounge!

The new Discharge Lounge opened on 4 Main in February and served over 150 patients in under 4 weeks! This number is higher than the combined number of patients served by the last 4 attempts at operating a discharge lounge.  So what was done differently? The prior models relied on the RN to transport the patient from the unit to the lounge.  The current model utilizes capacity management team members to do the transport from the unit to the lounge.  These outstanding results opened up 150 beds to receive patients that normally would be held up waiting for patients to be discharged. Excellent job!

Nurse Manager Council Highlight:

Clinical Ladder Program
The Clinical Ladder Program was developed as a means to promote the nurse’s growth as a professional nurse on the path to exemplary professional practice.  With levels one through four, nurses at Hackensack UMC will be provided with the tools needed for professional development.  Ranging in expectations for each level, applications require a portfolio essential with documentation, including a resume, peer review, contact hours, among many others. The Clinical Ladder Committee (CLC) will meet monthly reviewing applications April through July.  Nurses will be evaluated annually on their updated portfolio, mentoring and role modeling, skillset of clinical decision making, leadership, consultation and collaborations skills, growth and professional activity involvement.

***With support from Dianne Aroh, Executive Vice President, Chief Clinical and Patient Care Officer, the Center for Advance Practice held the first bootcamp January 9-12, 2017.  Over the four days, 32 speakers were recruited ranging from APNs, doctors of pharmacy, a respiratory therapist supervisor and physician specialists, presenting over 40 topics.  The last day included patient case scenario reviews in the simulation lab providing hands on learning.

There were 18 participants in the bootcamp, of which nine attended all four days.  Evaluations of the bootcamp demonstrated a 43% increased confidence to recognize, prescribe, diagnose, and manage common conditions within an acute care setting!
